MSc in Genetic Manipulation and Molecular Cell Biology-
This one-year Masters Course (MSc) in Genetic Manipulation and Molecular Cell Biology is open to graduates, or those with relevant experience, in biochemistry, genetics, or any other appropriate biological subject.
The course offers postgraduate training in modern techniques used to study biological problems at the molecular level. These techniques include molecular genetics, genomics, proteomics and protein engineering. Your studies will be undertaken within the School of Life Sciences although close links exist with the new Medical School and the Genome Damage and Stability Centre.
The course runs from October to September and consists of a taught component in addition to a research project. The research project is laboratory based and permits hands-on experience of modern molecular techniques. The taught components consist of Advanced Methods in Molecular Research, Topics in Genetic Manipulation and Molecular Cell Biology and one of the following final year undergraduate courses:
- Molecular Genetics
- Biochemistry of Gene Expression
- Genes and Development
- Protein Form and Function
- Molecular Ecology and Evolution
The course is assessed by examination, coursework and a project dissertation.
There is also a postgraduate training programme within the School of Life Sciences dedicated to new graduate students. It is held early in October and covers such aspects as general Health and Safety, radiological protection and library and computing facilities in addition to a techniques programme tailored to your research interests.
Advanced Methods in Molecular Research
This seminar-based course introduces students to a variety of techniques used by molecular biologists and biochemists, and which may be encountered in the research project.
